This Sunday, YOUR Renegades and the local hockey community will come together to celebrate GMHL referee Mike DaSilva, who is currently battling cancer. YOUR Renegades will honour Mike’s dedication to the game with a special pre-game ceremony, highlighting his impact on the sport and the league.

Before the national anthem, Mike will be presented with a plaque featuring a heartfelt message of appreciation from YOUR Renegades, recognizing his years of service and unwavering commitment to hockey.

Adding to the night’s special moments, Mike’s 14-year-old son will join YOUR Renegades on the ice for warm-ups. Mike will also take part in a ceremonial puck drop.

To further support Mike and his family during this difficult time, YOUR Renegades have organized several fundraising initiatives that will occur throughout the evening. Fans will get a chance to participate in a chuck-a-puck fundraiser, with pucks available at one for $5 or three for $10.

Additionally, a raffle for a pair of  box seats tickets to an upcoming Raptors or Maple Leafs game will be on sale for $20 a ticket. All proceeds from these initiatives will go directly to Mike and his family to help with ongoing expenses.

Mike’s journey in hockey began at 18, when he started playing in men’s league games. His competitive spirit and love for the game eventually led him to officiating, where he has spent the last 15 years as a referee. After starting with minor hockey and men’s leagues, Mike joined the GMHL following a recommendation at a weekend tournament.

“I love how competitive the league is and being on the ice with kids trying to get recognized and move forward with their hockey careers,” Mike said. “But what I love most is the camaraderie with my fellow officials. I’ve made friends for life because of this league.”

Mike has always taken pride in being a referee. One of his most memorable moments came during the 2023 GMHL semi-final between North York and the Bulls in Bradford — a high-stakes game where he witnessed the pure joy of the players and coaches celebrating their win.
