Renegades Alumni Update: Maximus Marek
After years away from competitive hockey, Maximus Marek’s path to professional hockey wasn’t typical — it was relentless.
Now, he’s headed to Hungary to suit up for Lehel HC in the Andersen Liga (OB2).
“It’s a big step for me,” said Marek. “A chance to prove myself overseas and keep climbing the pro ladder.”
That opportunity seemed unlikely. Marek had been away from the game for nearly four years, and returning to the ice wasn’t something he expected to lead anywhere — let alone a professional contract.
“Honestly, I didn’t think I’d be back at this level,” he admitted. “But once I committed and came back, I realized how much I missed the game—and how much I still had to give. I went all in, trained like my future depended on it, and made the most of every opportunity. Getting to the pro level again felt earned.”
One of the biggest turning points came when Marek joined YOUR Renegades.
“They believed in me when I was coming back,” he said of the GMHL team. “The coaching staff gave me a real opportunity — not just with ice time, but a platform to rebuild my confidence and show what I can do.”
The Renegades’ culture, focused on development and professionalism, was exactly what Marek needed to reignite his career.
This past season, Marek led the team in goals with 37, becoming one of the GMHL’s most dangerous offensive weapons. But it wasn’t just the stats that defined his year.
“I found my confidence again. I played with purpose, developed real leadership qualities, and built momentum that I’m now carrying into pro hockey,” Marek explained.
One highlight of the season was the GMHL All-Star Game, where Marek was crowned the league’s fastest skater — a testament to the intense off-ice training he committed to during his comeback.
“It was a proud moment. I’ve worked hard to get faster and more explosive, so winning fastest skater proved that work is paying off.”
A major influence behind Marek’s resurgence has been Renegades head coach Darryl Lloyd.
“It meant everything,” said Marek of his relationship with Coach Lloyd. “After not playing for four years, Darryl had me come out, saw my potential, and gave me a chance when no one else would have. That opportunity completely changed the direction of my life.”
Under Lloyd’s guidance, Marek embraced a professional mindset and stayed focused on discipline, accountability, and consistency.
“He pushed me mentally and physically, and helped me see the game from a higher level. I learned how to carry myself like a pro, not just play like one.”
Marek also credits the entire North York Renegades organization for their support. “I’ve got nothing but respect for everyone in the organization,” he said. “Amazing ownership and great staff—they care about the players, not just wins and losses, but our growth as people and athletes. They supported me through every step, and I’m genuinely grateful for that.”
Congrats Max! We will continue to watch your career unfold. You will always be #unitedinred
