Renegades Off To Russell Cup Championship
YOUR Renegades are off to the GMHL National Championship tournament after sweeping the Bradford Bulls to become the South Division champions for the first time in franchise history!
YOUR Renegades, who had the third most points in the GMHL during the regular season, earned their spot in the fight for the Russell Cup by defeating the Streetsville Flyers, Niagara Predators and the Bulls without losing a game.
North York (36-6-0-0 record) will join the host Titans (20-20-0-2) in Temiscaming next week for the first ever GMHL National Championship.
The tournament starts on March 30th, when North York will play the winner of the North Division (either Bradford Rattlers or Ville-Marie Pirates). YOUR Renegades then take on the winner of the West (either Mackenzie or High Prairie) on the 31st, before finishing up round-robin play against the host Titans on April 1st.
The National Championship final takes place on April 2nd.
Just like in the regular season, YOUR Renegades are led by South Division Best forward and MVP runner up Ryan Fritz, who set a new franchise record this season with a league-leading 131 points, with 51 goals and 80 assists.
Also in the talented forward group are Defensive Forward of the Year runner up Nikolai Salov and Most Sportsmanlike runner up Joseph Lionti who finished with 45 and 100 points respectively. Rounding out the group of forwards who scored 50 or more points during the regular season are Christopher Rende with 64 and Daniel Johnson with 55.
Fritz, Lionti and Johnson have continued their offensive production in the playoffs with Vadim Karpenko stepping up to add 6 goals and 6 assists.
Defenceman of the Year Runner Up Jedidja Somersall, Niko Andreopolous, and veteran Darius Mani helped lead a defence corps that shut down the potent Bulls offence in their sweep of Bradford in the South Finals.
In net, Nicholas Lewicky has been unbeatable with an 8-0 record in the playoffs, a 2.94 GAA and a save percentage of .920.
Led by coach Darryl Lloyd and his staff, YOUR Renegades will be looking to continue their hot play and bring home the title and complete their #runtotherussellcup!
